The HITECH Act of 2009 provides incentives for the use of electronic health records (EHRs). The intent of Congress was not simply to foster adoption but to achieve “meaningful use” of these systems. A summary the 24 Stage 1 hospital “meaningful use” objectives, with attention to those that can be leveraged to best improve safety, will be provided. This analysis may be used to align strategies for achieving “meaningful use”, enhancing safety and effectively utilizing information technology.
