EHR implementations, and the attendant efforts to receive reimbursement under the HITECH Act, are often seen as an opportunity to achieve a “paperless” enterprise on the way to improving organizational efficiency while meeting meaningful use requirements. In fact, removing all paper from an enterprise may have an advers impact on both patient safety and outcomes. To that end, some meaningful use requirements need to have their foundation in the digital world while still maintaining a foothold in the cellulose world.
This presentation examines several meaningful use objectives from a patient safety perspective and reviews how forward-thinking organizations are meeting those objectives with an eye toward improving outcomes, enhancing satisfaction and increasing efficiency. The perspectives shared are applicable to many IT initiatives as is the patient-centered focus that will be foundational to Accountable Care Organizations.
